View Full Version : TearDown announces Alien Assault
Within a very short time we will release our new game Alien Assault. It is a top down turn based strategy game in which you control up to 10 soldiers onboard space ships trying to exterminate aliens who have infested the vessels. Please stay tuned for more information, until then you have this logo to look at:

Aliens you say?! Hmm! I'm curious!
I think you might want to change the ships to some human colonies on weird planets, to further reference for the awesome Aliens movie.
Except then I could just take off and nuke from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Edit: How different is this going to be from Space Hulk anyway? Are you going to change anything else than skins and names, such as maps or stuff? Because I'm very much against that. (I'm really against all change in general.)
You could basically say that we will not include any content found in TDSH V1.0 or released by TD after V1.0 - except the tutorial.
The game will include the tutorial, one big campaign and 10 single missions - a total of 47 missions.

Not even the engine and system?

I assume that missions that were generated for V1.0 will still work on Alien Assault, as they did in TDSH v1.1, right?
Same goes for tilesets, and other mods.
PS. I would have chosen a name that also matched the SH short name, so that we could still call it TDSH v1.1
Great announcement!

We'll just have to get used to TDAA :)
Not even the engine and system?Content is content, binary is binary. I've already written that no code will be changed, it is the same exe that goes into AA that should have been released as TDSH.
Sure sure, but wouldn't that mean that the maps remain the same as well?
Sure sure, but wouldn't that mean that the maps remain the same as well? What do you mean with "remain the same"? We will not release any maps that you can find in any GW board game or books.
But that "It's the same exe" implies that you're not changing them. If you did, it wouldn't be the same exe anymore: changing graphics and texts is cool, but changing maps equals changing gameplay, which in turn equals changing the program itself.
The exe will not change. TDSH V1.1 missions will work in AA V1.0. We will not release SH missions in AA V1.0.

As I said in another thread, what attracts me to Space Hulk is the game play, the atmosphere and the thought of men fighting aliens in the rooms and corridors of abandonded space ships. A rebranding could still produce those very same qualities. I'm very much looking forward to what you guys come up with. Personally, I would like to see men still in power armour, but a more modern looking style...perhaps something similar to this (with a variety of weapons, of course);
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/awesomeshotdude/Cougar.jpg
....and as for the aliens, well something between the Genestealers and Aliens from the popular movies would be great.
The text would be easy, you guys could easily come up with something that suited.
Oh, BTW, I like the name Alien Assault....it's cool :)
The exe will not change. TDSH V1.1 missions will work in AA V1.0. We will not release SH missions in AA V1.0.
Do 1.0 missions work?

More or less.
It is recommended to touch them up in the editor first before trying to play them, however.
I have nothing special to add. Just wanted to express my support to you guys.
I have been following the development since the first version came out, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the next installment.
It's a shame you could not get a green light from THQ, but maybe this will be the beginning of a new franchise, instead... ;)
Keep up the good work.
I wish you guys the best of luck with the coming game.
Alien Assault !! - i like it!!
Looking forward to the release...
...
wow.
guys, the setting isn't very creative, you know. not trying to be an ass, but callin it like i see's it. anyhoo, you should do further than a rebrand. now that it's not 40k, you can incorporate your own enemies and stuff. like, ai controlled human people with long range weapons, or sumpin. and, sentry guns. </drool>
as far as story goes, my project, Atrophy, isn't comin out anytime soon. it also takes place in some abandonded research facility, with badass marines, and features terrorists instead of mindless xeno bugs, but it could work.;)
it's also a bit more creative than it sounds once i go into depth.
dammit, THQ. you've forced us to be creative. your selfish actions have brought a plague of unholy creativity and innovation upon this world! ye've unleashed a pox not even dread Cthulhu could withstand...my ideas.

We are not interested in doing any new work when it comes to code. Not adding new content.
And if you don't like our setting, feel free to make a mod using our engine. Just put it up in modification section and be the mod king of AA. ;)
Are you going to publish the unofficial Space Hulk mod at some point too?
We will not publish any SH content. Otherwise we could have released TDSH right away. Release it with the game or X days later will make no difference to THQ and GW.
But... unofficial? Like, supposedly fan-made, except looking peculiarly like the 1.1 would have looked like?
In that case the content would be fan/community made.
And THQ doesn't think that's bad? What's the difference?
I might be wrong but I think the difference is that "fan made" is changing a game into something else, not being like that from the very start.

Im happy to play whatever the graphics look like. I think you are doing the right thing.
Whilst I like the image awesomeshotdude posted, it would be best not to base anything on someone else's creation, just make up your own thing and Im sure it will look great.
Best of Luck.

*cough*
Is that why Jorgen left the team? :knowledge:
*cough*
Is that why Jorgen left the team? :knowledge:Haha, no. When we started talking about rebrand back in early spring* Jorgen told us all that if we do a rebrand he will leave this project as he would see it as the end of TDSH. So now he is writing on a new game design idea and I can pretty much guarantee that it will not be using an existing IP. ;)
* Yes, this has been on the agenda for a while now but we did not want to publically announce our plans since we feared that could make THQ less interested. Apparently something they became even without us going public with the rebrand plans.
Good to see you guys get up and going, definitely looking forward to it!
As TDSH V1.1 was more or less done in June I slowly started working on the rebrand in secret during the summer "if we were going to need it". Wasn't that much that we needed to change actually.
It has been a struggle not to mention too much about the "secret" rebrand when everyone on the forum asked us "do you plan to do a rebrand?!" "what will you do if you get a no?!" and so on...
Again, it all was kept internally to not risk a negative reaction on the other parties in the legal discussion. But now we feel there is no worries on opening the vault of secrets. ;)

I anxiously await!
Can you elaborate on the changes to the sprites? 'cause I'm kinda partial to the beefy terminator look (sure, I understand they cannot be EXACTLY terminator any more...). Also, I'm curious about the item look.
They will still be bulky, just not have the same look as Terminators in 40K.

Well... I can't say i wasn't expecting this, but i hoped for different scenario.
Damn...
One question : will AA support custom, user provided graphic and sounds ? ;)
AA will use the exact same code as TDSH V1.1. All content was torn out of the binary (compared to TDSH V1.0) to make modding easier. That helps us out now - big time! So the exe could more or less be released today, we are waiting for the new chapter graphics from Curtis (no pressure my friend ).

So are we just waiting on new graphics and it can be released...?
Basically. Maybe few days of testing to make sure everything is working and is correct (read: not using any other like english company's IP).
So are we just waiting on new graphics and it can be released...?
And of course, some of us are also waiting for the old graphics again.
A little question:
The tory behind the game... I usually like when thereīs more than gameplay (course that the original TDSH caught me by the gameplay) and by more I mean background. Will there be a background story for this game?
I know this is a game where every mission has no relation with the past mission. Maybe Iīm speaking about a context for the present situation: what happened, where did these alliens come from, etcetcetc.
Just curious...
the_Fifth_Horseman
08-14-2009, 15:41
We don't have a definite background story yet.
In order to not delay the release of Alien Assault v 1.0 any more than neccesary, the missions will not have storylines or custom briefings written for them.
These may, however, be added in a later add-on package.
Could I propose something Iīve been thinking or itīs already on discussion? I think the game could have a good background story on later releases... not just a name and missions with no links (now that the WH40000 universe is gone...)

Like I said, we don't have any definite ideas at the point, much less any we can all agree on. Any and all ideas are welcome.

I most definitely agree with you on that subject. :)
A good background will go to waste for me, but I agree too.

Hey Niklas,
I was wondering if after alien assualt has been released would i please be able to (it would be my pleasure) possibly write up some background to give Alien Assualt some possibly much needed universe and history and then have it approved by you, to make sure its all good or if it fits with what you want it to kind of feel like.
Its because a lot of what makes 40k so good, is its background and the whole universe which is filled with constant war and battle. Possibly adding this to AA would be great and could maybe be followed up with a series of stories for lots of background and tales of heroic sacrifice etc. etc

You can discuss the matter of what setting - or SETTINGS, since nobody said it has to be fixed to a single one - you'd like to see in Alien Assault in "Setting: A Brainstorm". (http://www.teardown.se/forum/showthread.php?t=630)
I see no problem with the community helping out in building the universe around Alien Assault. But to get AA V1.0 out as quickly as possible it will "only" include the game mechanics and not a background story.

I can only see this as an improvement. I never was a big fan of the design of terminator armor, and genestealers just look silly. Who seriously thought that the best way to design a terrifying alien was to make it bright purple?
I told youWell, people said that GW would never allow us. In the end they did, so we came further than everyone said. But it stopped at THQ instead not willing to be publisher.
But hopefully it will be an improvement as you say. :)
So much for making Blood Ravens out of the updated Terminator graphics.
What if you sent us the gfx files for the Chapters, or uploaded them to a photo hosting website and sent us the links to them? Would that still count?
Well, people said that GW would never allow us. In the end they did, so we came further than everyone said. But it stopped at THQ instead not willing to be publisher.
Couldn't you go whining at GW? Seeing how they're the ones who gave licence to THQ, couldn't they overrule their decision?
I think "overruling" THQ would violate their contract. But I am loling at THQ "publishing" your game. They wouldn't do anything, you'd just stick their logo in the intro.
They wouldn't do anything, you'd just stick their logo in the intro.Well, that's what publishing means. Putting their logo on the game and taking care of the distribution.

It would still count, since they did send us a cease & desist in the past, remember?
We cannnot release or send out any 40K related material since we are not allowed to use content from that IP. However it is free for anyone to draw their own 40K content, write about it on the forum and post a link to where you can download it (binaries will not be allowed to be stored on TD servers or attached to a post on the forum).

I'm pretty sure someone in the audience already had the bright idea to start an AlienAssault_mod group on Yahoo...
Another idea: We start with a blank image file, you load up Paint Shop Pro or something, and you tell us the X Y locations and color values of each pixel. You're not releasing anything, since we're making the gfx ourselves.
Just throwing ideas out there .

Like the old type-your-own-programs that used to come in Your Sinclair and the like.
Except even more dull, because you're not even learning anything... ;)
Well, we all have the old graphics files from version one that should be roughly compatible. It would just mean upgrading those graphics. :)
Well, primary mission is to get the game itself released. I've just seen the latest of Curtis' chapter graphics and read Horseman's new text content. It all looks promising, just a question of when it all will be done for us to have a few days of final testing before going public.

For reasons which do not concern you, he decided to come back.
If any current or former member of the dev team released any kind of mod from AA to SH, do you really believe GW and THQ would let that fly?

Im sure once the AA is out it will attract many people and some of them could be artistic creative enough to make the warhammer mod. But the AA style made by Mr.Curtis could pretty much beat the the Warhammer style. ...some info could be nice btw, gothic-hightech? dark-bright? inspired by?...

Ballistic.
Close combat weapons may have a bit to do with energy, seeing what Curtis did to the Chainfist (but it seems every one of us loved that idea).

Yeah, I'm pretty much staying clear of energy weapons - for some reason they just don't seem to fit with the new look of the armour.

I can hardly wait.
The main idea behind Alien Assault is to incorporate the community and expand the game. We will release the game with one chapter and two longer campaigns (along with 10 single missions). Then it's pretty much up to the people to start designing their own campaigns and squads to evolve the game further, and our main idea is not that people should start converting the game to Space Hulk but rather help us create our own story and game. With such passionate fans we think you are up to the task and who knows, maybe in the future we collect a whole bunch of custom made sqads and campaigns and release them in an expansion pack. We want this game to stand on its own legs without the need to constantly be compared to the old Space Hulk game we once made.
