Sulibor's thread about stats inspired me to post this thread :)

I like the soldiers killed/left behind and the aliens/hybrids/leaders killed stats the best. I've kept the same stats file since I've had AA, even though I did a second install to hold all the campaigns I could find, and play both installs (I swap the stats file to the install I am playing at the time).

I like to watch how the ratio progresses of 'soldiers lost:aliens killed'. It has been increasing continuously for me since I started playing the game, even though I lost a LOT of soldiers writing the Deadmeat and Kladinsk campaigns trying to get the balance right for the missions.

My first goal was 1 soldier:5 aliens, then 1:10, and last week I reached 1:15 :fighting:

Measured against the AA veterans here (I only started in January), my current kill ratio is probably quite low! heheh.

So....what is your kill ratio? 8)

I don't know about kill ratio, but once I noticed that I had launched the game more than 1000 times before the stats file was erased once again. Debugging for life!

Sorry for being a bit offtopic in your thread.

Keep the stats records coming...

I never get attached to my soldiers. If the mission require them to sacrifice their life then my little soldiers do so. Therefore I never remember their stats (or even reach rank above level three) very often. But my success-ratio is through the roof. :D

Jorgen: Victory is the only approved outcome. ;)

Well, I'm bad at killing aliens (and of course at any videogame I try), although I love AA:

Jorgen, spoken like a true and merciless Alien Assault commander, :) , yes, the mission is everything...must complete the mission.....at any cost....:fighting:.
After all, it is a war against the Swarm, and in war there are casualties! Good that you have a high success ratio, I wouldn't expect anything less from you :D. I bet your soldiers:aliens ratio is pretty good too though.

Niklas, not off-topic, m8, and anyway it is the Teardown team's forum, so you can post what you like where you like! 8). Yeah, I figured that some of you would have had the stats file reset at some point due to all the debugging. Again, like Jorgen, I expect your soldiers:aliens ratio would have been pretty good if you still had all the stats...

Catafracto, that is a good ratio in my opinion, it works out at just under 1:15, same as mine :D (4370+235+8)/313 = 14.7. (I double the number of leaders killed since they are at least twice the trouble to kill as a normal alien!)

I reckon Alex would have one of the best ratios, since he takes great pride in not losing many soldiers...

Maybe I have good stats ... but I've just *never* checked them.

As Jorgen points out, the point is winning the mission. If I can do it without losses, all the better. Keeping Akriel alive is also a good priority, but they guy is hard and can take the heat.

Another issue is that due to betatesting, mission testing & inventory, and such, I tend to reset the statistics more often than I should ... plus, I have several installations in my hard drive

Currently it reads 183 missions completed, and a ratio of about 40:1 (3200 kills, 80 losses)

..Soot..

Alex, that's funny, 'cos I was gonna post an estimate of your ratio, I was gonna post that I thought you would have around 40:1, lol. Really. :D. I didn't post the estimate in case I was way off.

I have a doubt: do you usually play with timer on and ranked shooting and close combat bonus off? I usually play this way. In fact, lacking of time is the main reason for most of my casualties...

Alex, if you play the same way too, you (not your marines, you) are a true God of War Against the Swarm!!:fighting::alien::alien::alien::alien:

..Soot..

Yup, Alex is a God of War!

Personally, how I play depends on my mood, sometimes timer is on when I want a fast-paced session, sometimes off when I want to relax and chill with the game, bonuses on most of the time, I like the idea that experienced soldiers fight better, bonuses off when I'm testing a new campaign or mission.

Timer on and bonuses off is definitely the most challenging way to play AA.

alex3337

I usualy play with:
- Round timer OFF
- Experience CP bonus ON
- Experience Close Combat bonus ON

The timer issue is just that I don't like being hassled. I want to move on to respond an email, play with my daughter, or do anything else without having to think about pausing the game.

I would play the same with the timer on. I have tested it several times to prove it to myself ... at one time I played for a whole week with it enabled, and did not even realize it.

The Close Combat bonus is mostly irrelevant, since I rarely experience melee combats. The Rule of Six, you know. I enable it to improve the chances of Akriel surviving (I'm attached to the guy).

The CP bonus DOES make a difference. Both my Sgt. are Archangels (5 CP minimum). I like playing in a very aggressive way, and this allows me to try some really amazing assault stunts.

Just to prove myself that I could do without it, I have also played almost all of the missions without bonuses (Niklas and the dev crew did not want me to play-test with bonuses, with good reason). I just play a bit more conservative, with about the same results. You end up needing a few extra heavy weapon shots (flamer primarily).

Defense missions is where the extra CP *really* gets you out of trouble.

Just keep in mind that I've been playing Space Hulk for two decades, and against human opponents much nastier than the AI (even if I must _highly_ praise Niklas' work on it, it's better than many other humans).

Lucky you!! I've lost most of my fearless soldiers just because I hadn't time to finish their moves, nor to think an advantagerous strategy... In fact, time limit it's more than a bit stressing for me.:'(

Alex, you're our only hope to survive the Swarm!!:fighting:

I think I've said it before, but sometimes I've become astounded with the moves of the AA artificial inteligence. In fact, it isn't perfect, but wait for the next AA release...:scared:

I've got my kill ratio up to 16:1 now :D.

Bear in mind that this is since starting playing AA, includes all stats, like testing my campaigns, and also the early days when I got my soldiers killed a lot!
A ratio covering just the last 2 months would be much higher, in the last 5 campaigns played, I killed around 700 aliens and lost only 3 marines...

Then there are those missions that are just hard, like in Genestealer Invasion, I got stuck on Hammer And Anvil there, lost 2 squads of 8 soldiers, and haven't returned to it for a while...

But you could say I've been playing a lot since January when I first started, killed 34,331 aliens so far... I just worked out the average aliens killed per day, it comes to around 230!!!

I agree that it is about completing the missions, but I do like to kill a lot of the alien scum if I can :fighting:

I've now completed ALL available campaigns (that's around 55 campaigns), except Genestealer Invasion, and a few others I just haven't got round to yet: Vicconius, First Contact 2nd mission, the two Colonial Marine campaigns, Albedo, and about half the single missions.

Lotta fun! 8)

alex3337

Indeed, there's a turning point where you just get through without losses.

I'll second Jorgen's question: what is everyone's favorite campaign(s)?

Is there a way to use the Forum to rate campaigns? I don't think I can do it using my web page ...

Alex, I agree about the turning-point, suddenly it all comes together and becomes easier to plan and to predict how the enemy will act.

OK, here goes for favourites (I've ended up posting nearly all the campaigns, 'cos I like them all, heheh):

Favourites for Difficulty and some really challenging missions:

Temple of the Damned
Infestation
Cloud Runners Last Stand
Genestealer Invasion
Defilement of Honour

Favourites for cool layouts, a nice flow:

Fire in the Hole original (not hybrids, though I like the hybrids one too)
Ven Suri Ven
Necromunda
Song of Destruction
Sin of Damnation (just cos it's an old familiar set of cool missions. Don't like the 3rd edition version though, too hard and too many tunnels!)
New Horizon
Sentinal V
Sabbathius

These two deserve a second mention for my favourite original stories:

Temple of the Damned
New Horizon

Then there's these campaigns that I've enjoyed immensely:

Tutorials (well thought-out missions that are great to get to know the game)
Harbinger of Despair
Broken Knife's Duty
Hulk of Harlequins
Sword of Halcyon
Bringer of Sorrow (original and 3rd edition)
Return to Kalidus
Archology 101

But I've enjoyed all the campaigns a lot! These are some others that I've enjoyed:

Directors Cut
Space Station 88
Seven Samurai
Mutant Chronicles
Spawn of Execration
Duty and Honour
Fangs of Fenris
Strike Deep
Abandoned
The Fate of the Sword of Halcyon
Bethor

It's very narcissistic of me, but two of my favourite campaigns are Deadmeat and Kladinsk, because I wrote them to be fun to play, and found that they were!

I've kept an almost complete log of which campaigns my squads have completed:

Cracked Hammer and Anvil with one KIA and 128 kills :fighting:
That was on my third attempt, with a fresh squad, so no bonuses.
Love this mission.
Had to be patient and wait for the right moment to enter the main hall, having shut all security doors except those in the hall. KIA was a VC malfunction. Used all VC ammo (Sarge Alcala was lucky!) and had one flamer hit left.

About to attempt Search and Destroy....looks nasty!

We should put you on the team as some sort of a stats keeper. ;)

Impressive is the least I could say.

Nice to see different tactics at work.

I've never played the mission like that ... after a while I just gave up on closing the "bottom" spawn points, unless I got written permission by the AI to do so.

I also tend to let the top-left entry open as well, i just rush with my guys towards the hall to get it closed ASAP.

128 kills? That's 30 turns or so! I'm impressed you VC ammo lasted that long ;)

Nilklas: Yeah, I do tend to like the stats in this game, heheh.
Kinda like a Resources Officer in the Army, I like to see the overall picture of how the war against the aliens is going; how efficient our soldiers are, what are our losses, how many aliens have we killed in the whole war...
Maybe I'm the Librarian in charge of the Statistics Codex ;)

Alex, your way of doing Hammer and Anvil was how I tried at first, but got wiped out too easily on my first two attempts, so tried different tactics:

Flamer led the way West with bolter in support, 2 VCs went South with a bolter.
Pushed hard and quickly to the entry points in the South, to free up those soldiers to help keep the North-South corridors safe.

Flamer shuts North-Western entry point (after killing about 20 aliens!), VC shuts North-Eastern entry point when way is clear, bolter covering corridor heading South.

Bolter with flamer leads way down Western corridor, stops and waits 6 squares from the hall, flamer right behind him.

So now I have bolters looking North and South in all North/South main corridors, splitting the enemy's efforts, with 2 VCs in the Eastern side-passage waiting to rush into the hall. Had to stay like this for a while until the situation in the hall was good to advance.

Rushed the hall with one VC, cleared all enemy and boxes to East with burst of Full Auto (on reload, was lucky it didn't jam!), closed Eastern entry point in hall. Moved the soldier in the South-East up to help cover the hall.

Next turn, moved the 2 VCs and bolters in East of main hall facing West, with support from one of the Southern soldiers. Cleared some enemy and lost a VC when it malfunctioned, leaving two bolters facing West in the hall (other VC was out of ammo by now)

2 turns later, had enough CP to move flamer's bolter into hall diagonally East, leaving room for flamer to fire a covering shot in behind bolter, blocking the enemy coming from the only remaining entry point, in West of hall.

From there, it was easy, just moved the flamer down, with 3 bolters shooting enemy as they came into the hall from the West, couple of flamer shots there too, and for a feeling of total safety sent the flamer to shut that point too.

Then my guys cracked open a few cans of beer, and took a leisurely stroll to the teleport

I hope they enjoyed the beers, cos they were the last beers they would ever drink...got through Search and Destroy with 2 KIA and then were wiped out in Hold and Secure.

Definitely one of my favourite campaigns!

Blimey!!! Managed to finish Genestealer Invasion, crazy campaign! Some really hard missions...especially Hammer and Anvil (lost 2 squads of 8 marines) and Search and Destroy (lost 3 squads of 8 marines).

I kept a tally of kills and losses throughout the campaign, including kills and losses for failed missions...unbelievable figures for one campaign...

831 KILLS

47 LOSSES

Worst losses I've had in a long while....

Still, kill ratio works out at around 17:1, and as War Resources Librarian and Keeper of the Statistics Codex, I am happy with that result, 17 dead aliens for each dead marine is acceptable attrition for a really hard campaign. They will be remembered... it was Omega's Starship Troopers in this conflict, they have certainly earned their place in my AA Army :fighting:

After reading your passage through it, I feel the urge to play it again  But alien's new campaign has already been posted, as scheduled :7

In GS Invasion I've always had more trouble with Hold & Secure than Search & Destroy ... definitely I need to have another go :fighting:

..Soot..
06-04-2010, 17:55
Oops! yeah I meant Hold and Secure was hard, not Search and Destroy....I think my brain was on vacation in another galaxy when I posted that

Search and Secure I did first time, it was Hold and Secure where I lost 3 squads.

I find reading people's methods of getting through missions interesting too, and sometimes they give me new ideas of how to tackle missions, I'd like to see more of them on the forum :)
