Since Rock Paper Shotgun's Let's Play of appears to be dead (no surprise there, really), I'm going to put money where my mouth was and produce a playthrough report of AA's default campaign.

Using Alien Assault version 1.021 and the default version of Infestation it contains.
Options:
Round Timer: off (I need to take the screenshots!)
Overwatch: kept until disabled
Ranked shooting/close combat bonus: on.
CP bonus based on Sergeant rank: on.
Blips: On scanner and on screen.
Auto-finish missions: no.

Options.dat attached.

Opening Movements
Turn 1: 3 CP
Moving out from the start, nothing unusual...
End of turn one:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/01/2.jpg

Turn 2: 5 CP
Sergeant Dreyfus and Trooper Morris advance, running like hell with the use of the CP. The remaining three troopers stay behind to secure the entry zone.
Dreyfus spots an alien and kills it

Turn 3: 6 CP
No surprises. The two soldiers rushing towards the objective are even further ahead, while the sentries just keep the first room covered to ensure nothing chitinous, brown and betaloned ssuddenly starts breathing on the advance team's back.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/01/4.jpg

Turn 4: 1 CP
... no enemy contact? This is beginning to get suspicious now.
Moving ahead, Morris catches by surprise an alien who was about to sneak up on him. It takes three shots, but small, brown and deadly dies just like anything else.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/01/5.jpg

Turn 5: 4 CP
A metal grate crashed against a wall somewhere... and nothing happened. Tell you what, that silence is starting to get on my nerves. Morris agrees, so he goes on Overwatch. One of the members of the rearguard moves forward, only to see there is an alien lurking in a side corridor.

Alien turn 5:
The alien spotted by Wright advances, only to find itself on the wrong end of Reiser and Jeffries' guns. Jeffries' carbine jams, but it's one shot too late for the alien.

Turn 6: 5 CP
Dreyfus secures the objective area, while Morris covers the corridor between them. Reiser and Jeffries advance forward.

Alien turn 6:
An alien jumps out at Reiser, who promptly jams - it's Wright's reactions that save the day this time round. Unfortunately, another gribbly springs out from a grate in the middle of the corridor guarded by Morris - unfortunately for the bug, that is.

Since the lack of music is starting to get on my nerves, time for a morale booster. Some heavy metal will do a lot of good here.

Shadow Game
One soldier, unknown enemy forces and unknown territory. Fun, eh?
On the plus side, a single soldier boosted with command points is moving faster than any alien, averaging 7 actions per turn.
So we're going to run this one. RUN LIKE HELL.

Turn 1 - 1 CP:
So far, so good...

Alien turn 1:
Wasn't that grate in the corridor right behind us? Uh-oh...

Turn 2 - 1 CP
Another 1-CP turn. Fun.
The alien indeed was right behind Dreyfus. Click, click... BOOM - Dreyfus is on the way again, with one more kill on his resume.

Turn 3 - 4 CP
Dreyfus marches on along the corridor, passing an inactive entry point... and finding himself meters away from an alien going in his direction.
Ahh, the convenience of Move & Fire in the morning. :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/02/1.jpg

Turn 4 - 3 CP
Whoops. Dreyfus' scanner has picked up something in that entry point. Run, Sergeant, run!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/02/2.jpg

Turn 5 - 2 CP
Whatever entered from that area didn't appear on the scanner again. Bad, I'm telling you. Baaad.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/02/3.jpg

Turn 6 - ?? CP
Dreyfus reaches the exit and turns around just in time to see an alien at the entrance to the room he just left. With a manic grin and a peculiar one-liner about the alien's ancestry, Dreyfus punches the teleporter's activation button.

The Sample
So, we're to rush in, grab the target an make like Indiana Jones (I mean the whole "escaping the creepy tomb in one piece" thing, not specifically "narrowly avoiding being crushed by a stone ball, hidden pitfalls, arrow traps, SNAKES and possibly doing all this while on fire"). Piece of cake. Right?

Turn 1 (2 CP):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/cbba854c.jpg

Turn 2 (2 CP):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/1.jpg

Turn 3 (3 CP):
We've been here a few minutes and nothing tried tearing off the good Sergeant's face. So far so good. Dreyfus grabs the softly humming container and heads for the exit...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/2.jpg

Turn 4 (4 CP):
This lack of aliens is suspicious. Where are they?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/3.jpg

Alien turn 4:
Well, that looks like a response.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/4.jpg

Turn 5 (3 CP):
There was only one alien, and Dreyfus quite successfully blew it away with three shots. Going for the exit now...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/5.jpg

Alien turn 5:
Looks like big brown and ugly brought friends.

Turn 6 (4 CP):
"Exit, exit, where's the exit?!"
Dreyfus continues to run forward.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/7.jpg

Alien turn 6:
Correction, that's "... friends and their extended families".

Turn 7 (4 CP):
The aliens are still too far to pose a threat. Dreyfus does what's natural and keeps running.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/the_fifth_horseman/Alien%20Assault%20playthrough/03/8.jpg

Alien turn 7:
That's another sensor reading. Uh-oh.

Turn 8 (2 CP):
Dreyfus reaches the target area and slams his fist into the door sealing button. As the double-reinforced security doors slam into place, he's safe and sound in the target room... save for the fact that door was the only exit and there's a bunch of pissed off aliens waiting on the other side now.

Mission complete.

These are fairly standard missions. Not that you could do something very different ... good game in any case.

Some key points that people may have missed:
- In missions 2 and 3 Horseman did not waste time & action points closing any of the security doors.

Two lessons here: First, if the tactic is to run, then RUN. Second, leaving open enemy entry points behind you encourages enemies to spawn there, and not in front of you (which is far more dangerous).

- Move & fire is your friend. I very much doubt these missions would be that "easy" if you had to stand & fire, as in the good old Space Hulk v1.0.

- Horseman is pulling a lot of experience and prior knowledge about the map here ... even if he will deny it

Let's face it, I got crazy about those first two missions when I played infestation for the first time myself. Now ... they feel like a piece of cake.

Let's see the rest of the missions. People will love Pandora :knowledge:

If I may, when you're done with infestation, can you do Purify + Prey, from the single missions directory?

Actually that was something of an experiment on my part. I tend to do that in 2, in 3 I figured that perhaps the AI would be less inclined to deploy the first few blips in the other entry point.

For having personally assembled those layouts, playing the whole thing through several times over, and double-checking everything for the final QA, "Experience" is kind of an understatement. :p

Do you remember that first few versions of Opening Movements and Extraction had an enemy entry tunnel leading right into the player's deployment zone? Made for some tense moments.
I especially liked that one time in Extraction when I forgot about the tunnel and the AI decided to sneak up... then went

Haha, sure. XD

Gameplay in that mission changes quite a bit if there's a blip coming from the front, you have to stop 6 squares away from it so that you can storm them on your own terms ... maybe it's wort trying to reproduce it for completion.

If you do Purify, only add the success or you will flood the forum with screens of failure. :D
