View Full Version : New Tile - Landing Bay

My first attempt at a new Alien Assault tile, this is a conversion of the Space Crusade "landing pad room" that I felt could serve as a missile launch silo or a small hanger bay in Alien Assault. My next goal will be to make a bigger version as a proper size hanger bay, but I wanted to try something simple first!

The problem I found was that the SC scan was nice 'n' big and the AA tiles so small, reducing it down resulted in either a ton of blurriness or too obvious sharpening. I narrowed down the "acceptable" tile looks to two different ones, and would appreciate folks say which they preferred "in game", appearance-wise (since I can't easily use the v1.00 editor due to the memory leak bug to test it much myself).

I've done five alternate versions to match most of the major tilesets (AA default, AA tutorial, AA infestation, THQSH and SH3E), and will post 'em once I know which variant here looks better in-game.

Very good!

The only thing is that it seems a bit dark in the concrete color, did you have the same color on it as the corridor leading away before adding all soot, colors and markings?

Version B is much better, crisper and all.

Thanks for the feedback! Version B it is, then! :D

I actually "pasted over" tile_028 of each respective tileset I was using (with modifications), so the concrete square leading away SHOULD be exactly the same as the one on the original tile_028.bmp tile.

If you mean the gray concrete of the landing pad itself, sadly that's how the original looks... while I'd love to get it to match the default tileset better, I think it would take me less time to just do the entire tile as an "original" from scratch (rather than the quicker approach of using the Space Crusade one) if I went down that path. Also, it would mean substantially more work to make each "variant" fit the different tilesets; as it is, at least I can make it fit the different ones out there so far with relative ease.

(the low quality "grid" over the landing pad is the thing I don't like most, and I'm tempted to try and remove and replace it, though that might end up looking worse than leaving it alone!).

Here's the other tileset variations... again, the fit is only "best can do" using the SC original (i.e. the floor matches some sets better than others) and redrawing from scratch... should I add "coloured lighting" to the SH3E one for a better match, though?

Well, it is good enough. And there is that yellow/black stripe at the entrance to the room so you do not see the tint/color difference so much.

Exactly why I "cheated" and added that to the tile!

I can reason that since it's a landing pad, it needs a much stronger floor than the rest of the complex, hence the different colour... :johndoe:
